LED Solar Street Lights.

LED-solarPhilips’ SpeedStar luminaire, incorporating LEDGINE Greenline, was the perfect fit for this project, combining an innovative carbon neutral design with a long lifetime of 60,000 hours; signaling an end to the hassle and cost of regular maintenance. More specifically, this solution offers savings of up to £10,000 through reduced maintenance alone. SpeedStar also incorporates the easy-to-upgrade LEDGINE which provides a future-proof solution that can also be connected to lighting regulation systems for further savings.

One of the more interesting products  that featured at this month’s Consumer  Electronic’s Show in Las Vegas, isn’t really a consumer product at all, unless someone’s going to install a lamppost in the garden. But at this year’s show, Philips and NXP Semiconductors were showing off their new solar powered LED street light. I predict a big future in the coming years for solar powered LED street lights. From our RMB perspective, again it’s all about future demand for REEs.

I continue to think that we are still under estimating the future demand for REEs as our 21st century unfolds. Our lifestyle and technology are changing faster than we can really keep up. Although solar LED street lights are suitable for off-grid applications in places like Africa and India, my guess is that most of the early uptake will come from developed western local authorities looking to cut the electricity and maintenance bills. Just imagine the cost savings if Philips moves the manufacture from Holland out to China.

Below, recent developments in LED street lights.

Philips and NXP develop solar-powered LED street light
24 Jan 2012The Solar Gen2 solar-powered LED-based street light is competitive with grid-based street lights and delivers 98% power-conversion efficiency from the photovoltaic cells to battery.
At the recent CES show in Las Vegas, Philips Lighting and NXP Semiconductors NV (Nasdaq:NXPI) based in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, demonstrated the recently introduced Solar Gen2 solar-powered street light. The street light is designed to supplement the capacity of conventional electric grids in urban areas by charging during daylight hours, or to provide off-grid street lighting.

The street light combines very high brightness and energy efficiency with patented optics to provide a lamp that can be spaced up to 50 meters pole-to-pole. Wider spacing allows a reduction in the total cost of road lighting.

---- Kees van der Klauw, senior vice president of technology & development at Philips Lighting, says, “Solar Gen2 is a fantastic example of how several companies have worked together to create an innovative best-in-class solution. It addresses a real need felt by 1.6 billion people in countries where the electricity grid cannot be relied upon to power street lighting at night. Solar Gen2 provides a cost-effective, reliable, off-grid outdoor lighting solution that can compete with existing on-grid lighting in performance, integral cost and energy consumption, improving the quality of people’s lives around the world.”
